Jean Valjean: "We Found Love" Rihanna and Calvin Harris
Lyrics:
It's like you're screaming, and no one can hear
You almost feel ashamed
That someone could be that important
That without them, you feel like nothing
No one will ever understand how much it hurts
You feel hopeless; like nothing can save you
And when it's over, and it's gone
You almost wish that you could have all that bad stuff back
So that you could have the good
Yellow diamonds in the light
Now we’re standing side by side
As your shadow crosses mine
What it takes to come alive
It’s the way I’m feeling I just can’t deny
But I’ve gotta let it go
We found love in a hopeless place
We found love in a hopeless place
We found love in a hopeless place
We found love in a hopeless place
Shine a light through an open door
Love and life I will divide
Turn away 'cause I need you more
Feel the heartbeat in my mind
It’s the way I’m feeling I just can’t deny
But I’ve gotta let it go
We found love in a hopeless place
We found love in a hopeless place
We found love in a hopeless place
We found love in a hopeless place
Yellow diamonds in the light
Now we’re standing side by side
As your shadow crosses mine (mine, mine, mine)
We found love in a hopeless place
We found love in a hopeless place
We found love in a hopeless place
We found love in a hopeless place
We found love in a hopeless place
We found love in a hopeless place
We found love in a hopeless place
We found love in a hopeless place
Analysis:
Jean Valjean loves Cosette very much and in the last section, the audience see to what lengths he is willing to go for Cosette. “I went as far as the corner of the street, I must have seemed strange to the people who saw me pass, i looked like a crazy man, once I went out with no hat. My children, I do not see very clearly now, I had some more things to say, but it makes no difference. Think of me little.” (Hugo 594). Hugo demonstrates Jean Valjean’s hunger for his “daughter” by saying how he went out every single day, as well as how he says think of me little. The think of me little part represents how although he has gone through so much to get to this moment, he does not want to be in the spotlight of Marius and Cosette’s love. In the song “We Found Love” it talks about love being captured in unlikely situations, “we found love in a hopeless place”. This is similar to the book because Jean Valjean and Cosette’s love is unlikely yet stills blossoms into eternal happiness.
