Analysis:
In the section Marius, change is an idea that is being thrown around by every main character. Jean Valjean has once again assumed a new character, the students of France are revolting and realizing the government has been holding them down too long. However, the most drastic change is Marius has gone from being weighed down by his father, to being an independent man. “Down with the Bourbons, and the great hog Louis XVIII” (Hugo 241). Marius was once cared for, for everything from the clothes he wore to the food he ate, but by saying this phrase he has become his own independent man. This is revealed by his denial of goods from his previous family, “Marius sent the thirty lous back to his aunt, with a respectful letter, in which he tld her that he had the means of living, and tht he could provide henceforth for all his necessities. At that time he had three francs left.” (Hugo 255). The section of the book heavily relates to the song Break Free by Ariana Grande. In the song she states, “This is the part when I say I don't want ya/I'm stronger than I've been before/This is the part when I break free/Cause I can't resist it no more” (Grande). This similar to how Marius feels because after being under his grandfather’s rule for so long, he realizes he needs to become his own person. The line “I’m stronger than I’ve been before” is key to Ariana and Marius. Although, Marius struggles financially, everything he has are things that he has worked for, hence making him stronger than ever.
